The service offered by Heather Care is outstanding, of high quality and most importantly caring.

Heather Care offer quality care, support, fun and interactive activities for my Mum.

We especially looked for a provider who could offer all of these services in one package.

A case study is presented of an 84-year old woman with severe cognitive impairment implicating AD, but for whom music recognition and memory, according to her caregivers, appeared to be spared. The hypotheses addressed were, first, that memory for familiar music may be spared in dementia, and second, that musical recognition and memory may be reliably assessed with existing tests if behavioural observation is employed to overcome the problem of verbal or written communication. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our clients, business partners and community teams continued good health throughout these challenging times. We wanted to take time out from our busy day to update you. As you may know, May is a month for bank holidays and this year, the Early May Bank Holiday will be moved to Friday, 8th of May to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the end WW II in Europe.

As a result of COVID-19 and social distancing, these can no longer go ahead. We’ll of course keep you updated, and we look forward to meeting you all again soon. And of course, not forgetting Captain Tom Moore (Honorary Colonel) for his extraordinary achievements for NHS front line workers.

Autumn is well and truly upon us and the days seem to pass as quickly as the leaves are falling from the trees. The nights are closing in and it's that wonderful time of year when we spend time in doors with our family and loved ones.

At this time of year we often support the family carers through our Adult Respite Care. It’s so important for a carer to take a break and this should not be regarded as a luxury but as an essential part of being able to maintain the caring role, even if it’s just for a few hours or so each week. At Heather Care we can offer such short respite care each week or cover longer periods of time, including overnight stays and sittings when a carer is on holiday or otherwise unavailable, such as being ill.

If LEARNING is defined as “Acquiring knowledge and skills and having them readily available from memory so you can make sense of future problems and opportunities.” It follows that a learning disability is a condition that limits that. read more blog https://www.heathercare.uk/ld

One of the joys of being part of Heather Care-Sale is seeing the pride and excitement of all our members as they put on our Annual Christmas Show.

             Our varied performances

Over the years we have brought to life, and given a new twist to, the stories of Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, The Sound of Music, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Wizard of Oz……all creatively re-worked by Gill.

We’ve also put on some extremely varied, alternative shows: one that celebrated the uniqueness of every member of Heather Care and another, entitled “Armistice” marking the 100 years since the end of WW1.

             Music, Singing and Dancing

We all greatly enjoy music so all our shows involve lots of singing and dancing and this year will be no exception when we perform Aladdin. We have such a great time preparing for the show, right from the start when we decide which production we will do; Steven often has ambitious plans – “Phantom of the Opera” was one idea that we had to put on one side (for the time being at least!).

Then, once Gill has written the script it’s all hands-on deck to learn our parts, create dance routines, paint sets, gather costumes and make props.

           Respite Care, what is it?

The dictionary states, ‘Respite care’ is short-term care that is provided for the very old or very sick [http://bit.ly/31aytiR].

We know from experience that respite care is a valued service that enables loved ones to have a change, a rest in a lovely environment and importantly to have fun, laughter and enjoyment.

For the families who are also the carers it provides time to recharge also, to catch up and take a break from the day to day care of their loved ones.

The feedback from families is overwhelming, “I found respite care to be exactly what I needed. I felt guilty about leaving my husband at first, but I returned feeling much more energised and much less drained. Having looked after myself, this meant I could look after my husband better too.'

Not only can this reduce feelings of anxiety or guilt, it can also help carers to feel less alone in what they are going through. [http://bit.ly/2qfmiET]

Arranging respite care will help you to do just that. You’ll be able to recharge by taking some time off from your care duties, while making sure your loved one is well looked after during your absence.

However, it can be a worrying prospect to leave behind someone who depends on you whilst you take time off. There are many ways you can make sure they are well cared for in your absence.

Every situation is different, so it’s important to consider what will work best for your loved one and discuss it with both them and the other people involved in their care.

it follows that a learning disability is a condition that limits that.

A learning disability is a reduced intellectual ability and difficulty with everyday activities – for example household tasks, socialising or managing money – which affects someone for their whole life.

People with a learning disability tend to take longer to learn and may need support to develop new skills, understand complicated information and interact with other people.

For example, Down’s syndrome is classed as a learning disability, whereas dyslexia is classed as a learning difficulty, in that it only affects an individual's ability to process information, usually in problems with reading, writing and spelling.

Difference between Learning Disability and Mental Health Issue

A learning disability is a permanent condition developing at the latest in early childhood, whereas mental illness (or a mental health problem) can develop at any time, and is not necessarily permanent.

People can get better and resolve mental health problems with help and treatment,

whereas people with learning disabilities are not ‘treated’ but rather receive support which enables them to most effectively and happily lead their lives.

How does a learning disability affect a person’s life?

People with learning disabilities do not learn certain skills as quickly as other people and may therefore need extra help in certain aspects of their lives. The specific skills in question will depend upon the type of disability.

People with mild learning disabilities may live alone, travel independently, and work. They may not require any support from their local authority, or may just need support in managing their finances.

Other people may require more regular support to ensure their safety and health on a daily basis. Those with more severe or complex needs may need extensive, hour-to-hour help in performing basic skills, such as eating, dressing and washing.

Dementia is not something that just happens to everyone as they get older, it is caused by different illnesses. In most cases people can remain in their own homes in familiar surroundings with people they love and trust. Outside support may be needed to enable a carer to carry on with their own life as normal as possible (going to the gym, a walk or even shopping).

          So, what is dementia?

Our brains control almost everything we think, feel, say and do and they also store our memories for us. There are illnesses that stop a person’s brain from working properly. When a person has one of these illnesses, they may have problems remembering, thinking and speaking. They might say or do things that seem strange to others and find it harder to do everyday things. They may not seem like the person they used to be. Source:

In most cased the individual’s symptoms can often be difficult to spot as the onset may be slow and gradual and not severe enough to be diagnosed as dementia. At this stage, it can be confusing for those around, as well as the person involved. For a family member the changes in communication to a loved one with dementia about their issues can of course pose challenges. The key is learning to improve and adapt these skills to cater to those living with dementia. Communication is always very important to ease stress and help any difficult situations that may arise. Remember to set a positive and helpful manner in which to interact. This includes body language and attitude, before approaching anything that may upset them. Looking out for someone’s best interests is what is always considered the best possible approach.

We always recommend to our clients that if they have If there is a concern, it is always best to get a second opinion from a GP as soon possible. They will be able to clear up any confusion for you and ensure you are left feeling confident in this diagnosis.
